Employers
VNPF has more than 6,000 active employers nationwide. It is compulsory under Vanuatu law for all employers to pay contributions for any employee aged 14 and 55 earning VT 3,000 per month or more. Employers must register with VNPF within 7 days of the commencement of business operations, and are responsible for registering any employees within 14 days of their employment. Once registered, employers will receive a Certificate of Registration and employees a Certificate of Membership.
Expatriate employees are also subject to Vanuatu law and must make contributions, unless they have been approved by VNPF to have their contributions directed to an alternative overseas superannuation fund, or they are serving with a diplomatic or international mission.
Self-employed workers, including employers, are not obliged to join, however they can join and contribute as a Voluntary Member.
The amount of contributions is calculated based on the monthly remuneration of an employee. Currently, the rate of contribution is 8% of the employee's remuneration, of which 4% is from the employee's monthly remuneration while 4% is contributed by the employer. Severance pay, gratuity payments (due under terms of employment), and any allowances or reimbursements do not form part of the gross remuneration. Click here to find out how to make monthly contributions for your employees.
If an employer fails to pay the contributions of their employee/s, there are several potential consequences that may follow, depending on the circumstances of the non-payment. Click here to find out more about our enforcement procedures.
If an employer has more than one place of business, they may apply to have each business location registered separately, however each of these businesses must carry out all responsibilities required, including the registration of employees and payment of contributions.
Employers must notify us of any changes in the operations of business, such as closure of business, a change in location, in the number of persons employed, and in the principal activity of the business. To do this, you must submit a Change of Employer Details form to include any of the above changes, with supporting documents.
